OUTDOOR FIREPLACES
Planning an Outdoor Fireplace
Before building, it helps to decide on wood or gas, the size of the fireplace, where smoke will go, and how it fits with your patio and seating. Rules on outdoor wood burning differ from city to city, so check your municipality before choosing wood. Gas units need a licensed gas fitter for the connection. Every outdoor fireplace also needs a solid base so frost does not crack it.

A Backyard You Use Longer
An outdoor fireplace makes your patio usable on cool spring and fall evenings, not just in the middle of summer.

Built Like a Real Fireplace
A proper footing, firebrick-lined firebox and well-proportioned chimney help it draw well and stand up to Ontario winters.

Designed for Your Space
Natural stone, brick or a mix, with hearths, seating walls and wood storage designed around your patio.
Quality Service
Design & Quote
We help you choose the style, size, materials and fuel type, then provide a written quote and timeline.
Build the Base
We prepare a solid footing or slab sized for the weight of the fireplace, so frost and settling do not crack it.
Our Process
At Monarch Masonry, we build outdoor fireplaces the same way we build masonry fireplaces inside a home. We start with the design: size, materials, location and whether it will burn wood or gas. Then we pour or build a solid base, construct the firebox with firebrick and refractory mortar, and build the stone or brick body and chimney. The result is a fireplace that looks custom, works well and holds up year after year.
Construct the Fireplace
We build the firebox with firebrick and refractory mortar, then the stone or brick body, hearth and chimney.
Finish & First Fire
We clean the stonework, clear the site and tell you how long to let the mortar cure before the first fire.

REVIEWS

Can I burn wood in an outdoor fireplace?
It depends on your municipality. Rules on outdoor wood burning vary, so check with your city first. If wood is not allowed, a gas fireplace is a good alternative.
Can you build a gas outdoor fireplace?
Yes. We build the masonry around a gas burner, and a licensed gas fitter makes the gas connection.
What materials can you use?
Natural stone, manufactured stone veneer, brick, or a combination, with natural stone or precast caps and hearths.
How long does it take to build?
Most outdoor fireplaces take about 1 to 2 weeks depending on size and design, plus curing time before the first fire.
